Unique Celebrations During The Month of May

Many people are aware of the popular holidays that occur during the month of May. There is Cinco De Mayo. This is a celebration of a Mexican military defeat of the French during the battle of Puebla in 1862. This is celebrated on the 5th of May. This makes Cinco de Mayo a holiday difficult to forget when it's held. There is also Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember the men and women who died while serving in the military. How many people remember to celebrate National Hoagie Day during May?

*WARNING: These are real holidays. If you attempt to celebrate them, you won't be alone.

National Hoagie Day
May 5th
Some people call them hoagies; others call them a sub sandwich or hero. In the New England states, I understand they're referred to as grinders. Whatever they are called where you live, May 5th is designated as National Hoagie Day. I must admit; I celebrate National Hoagie Day more often than is probably acceptable. In my world, any day could be a day to celebrate hoagies.

International No Diet Day
May 6
The reason for International No Diet Day is for people to appreciate the bodies they have. I know some people on diets who have a lot of body to appreciate. This was sponsored by anti-diet groups (Who knew there were such groups?) to help people suffering from anorexia and other similar health conditions. This day is designated for people to evaluate their weight management goals. They believe losing weight should not risk a person's health. I usually celebrate No Diet Day 365 days a year.

Lost Sock Memorial Day
May 9th
This is a day designated to honor all the unmatched socks in the world. Celebration consists of spending time searching for the missing socks. Once the search is over, and the unmatched socks remain without their proper mate, it's time to discard them. I plan to celebrate this day by throwing out my unmatched socks to the sounds of “Taps” being played. I may also have a hoagie.

Twilight Zone Day
May 11th
The thinking behind this is that everyone has a day that is surreal, weird and can't be easily explained. Twilight Zone Day (I have days like this when I take mass transportation. I think someone motivated by Rod Serling works for the TSA.) is designated to think about having such a day. There are times I've watched episodes of “The Twilight Zone” and yelled, “Hey, he got that story idea from my family.”

Dance Like A Chicken Day
May 14th
Who knew there was such a desire to dance like a chicken? There is a day in May set aside to honor chicken dancing. The reason for this holiday is that most people need a reason to do the “Chicken Dance.” It's a popular tune at wedding receptions and certain social events. Now, chicken dancing is not limited to weddings and social events, it has its very own day. The socially acceptable moments to do the Chicken Dance seem to be increasing at an alarming rate. I wonder if this holiday is officially recognized by Colonel Sanders?
Sunscreen Protection Day
May 27
Memorial Day this year is May 25th, and that is the beginning of the summer season. It only makes sense that two days later we'd celebrate Sunscreen Protection Day. This is a day to make certain you have a sufficient amount of sunscreen for the upcoming summer months. This stuff should even be applied on cloudy days. Those ultraviolet rays from the sun are no joke.

Remember this is the month of May. It's time to have a hoagie, forget about your diet, mourn your lost socks, remember the Twilight Zone, dance like a chicken and put on some sunscreen. Is this a great way to start the summer season or what?
